    This video explains how, by 7.1, Dolby had hit the wall of diminishing returns on audio surround channels. With Atmos, they’re moving overhead. I totally agree with puddin-gs, however, that aesthetics—not a lack of technological verisimilitude—is Hollywood’s main sound problem. Not just too much bass, but too much compression and sonic hyperreality by default make most summer blockbusters completely deadening experiences from my perspective.

    I wish more art house directors would take sound as seriously as vision—in capable hands, Atmos could be a transcendent experience.
